November 1, 2006 - American Bank Center/SMG is proud to announce the arrival of the arenafootball2 in Corpus Christi. A Corpus Christi af2 team will take the field at the American Bank Center Arena in 2007.
The af2 officials had expressed a strong commitment several months ago to bring arena football to Corpus Christi months ago. After receiving a signed Letter of Intent by af2 officials, American Bank Center/SMG moved forward by putting a definitive lease agreement in place.
Corpus Christi is one of five cities to be added to the af2 family for 2007. “This is a great city for arenafootball2. We strive to bring the highest quality entertainment and sports to Corpus Christi and I believe we have done that with the addition of the af2,” said American Bank Center General Manager Marc Solis.
Corpus Christi’s af2 team owner is Joe Avezzano, a 15-year NFL coaching veteran. Leading the team will be Head Coach Michael Trigg, who brings 18 years of playing and coaching experience in the Arena Football League, Coach Trigg lead the AFL’s Grand Rapids Rampage to an Arena Bowl XV victory and was voted AFL “Coach of the Year” in 2001.
