April 9, 2007 - Five different Arizona Sundogs scored Saturday Night as the Dogs held off a Corpus Christi Rayz rush for a 5-2 win. The Rayz nearly forced overtime late, but Arizona stood their ground and emerged victorious. With the win, Arizona took a 3-2 lead in the Southern Conference Quarterfinal best-of-seven series. The Rayz and Sundogs will now return to the American Bank Center at 7:05pm on Tuesday, April 10th for Game Six. Rayz playoff tickets are currently on sale, starting as low as $10. Corpus Christi scored the game’s opening goal for the first time in the series when Todd Paul beat Mike Wall from the blue line on a power play 8:14 into the game. Arizona pulled back even late in the frame when amateur Steve Benedetti slammed home a beautiful centering feed from Dmitri Leonov at 17:57. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz in the first period for the fifth straight game 13-3.
The second period went deep into the frame scoreless, but the Sundogs broke the tie with a last minute tally. Ryan Steeves redirected a Cory Stillman shot at 19:15 for the go ahead goal and made it 2-1 Sundogs. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz 12-7 in the middle period.
In the third period, Ladislav Kouba scored his first of the series at 12:35 to make the score 3-1 Sundogs. The Rayz pulled within one when Kevin Watters notched his third of the playoffs at 15:40. However, that’s as close at they’d come. Final minute empty net goals by the Sundogs sealed the scoring. Brent Kelly scored his sixth of the playoffs at 19:08 and at 19:52 Mathieu Beaudoin capped the scoring summary.
Vogel, who fell to 2-3 on the playoffs, was saddled with the loss. He made 34 saves on 37 shots. Wall earned the win, making 21 saves on 23 shots and improved to 3-2. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz 39-23. Corpus Christi went 1-4 on the power play and Arizona went 1-6.
Game Six will be at the American Bank Center at 7:05pm on Tuesday Night, April 10th.
