Starting May 24th through June 17th, Feld Entertainment, SMG American Bank Center and non-profit Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. asked Coastal Bend residents to donate their gently used cell phones to help military deployed overseas call home. In return, for every cellular phone donated a voucher was offered for a 50% discount off ticket prices for a family 4 pack of tickets to Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Fully Charged. A total of 48 phones were collected from patrons and additional 35 phones were donated by SMG American Bank Center.
“ There were people who brought three or four phones to the box office and only used one phone for the discount and passed out the rest of their phones to other people standing in line so they could receive the discount,” said Eric Jaramillo, SMG American Bank Center Director of Marketing. “ We thank everyone who donated their cell phones as well as Feld Entertainment for offering the special vouchers for this very special program.”
The cell phones were shipped to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program who will sell the phones to a recycling program. The proceeds collected go toward purchasing calling cards that are sent to troops overseas. American Bank Center is a permanent collection site for Cellphones for Soldiers; cell phones can be dropped off at the main office in the Convention Center Monday through Friday, 10am-6pm.
